MOKORO
MEANING "MOTHER" IN SHENG, MOKORO IS A MULTIMEDIA DISPLAY CELEBRATING THE SANCTUARY OF SISTERHOOD. A COLLECTIVE OF YOUNG WOMEN LIVING IN AN INFORMAL SETTLEMENT IN KENYA ARTFULLY CHALLENGE THE LIMITS OF WASTE THROUGH UP- CYCLED FASHION AND DESIGN.
PHOTOGRAPHER KRISTIN LEE-MOOLMAN AND STYLIST LOUISE FORD WERE INTRODUCED TO THE INITIATIVE IN 2018 WHILST SHOOTING AN UPCYCLING STORY IN KENYA. THE DUO PARTNERED WITH ERE AND THE PRODUCTION COMPANY FARAGO PROJECTS WHO FELT EQUALLY MOVED BY THE WAREMBO WASANII INITIATIVE AND DIDN'T HESITATE TO SUPPORT THE STORY TO ITS FINAL STAGES. THE CREATIVE TEAM WAS COMPLETED BY HAIR STYLIST YANN TURCHI. THE TEAM RENTED THE GARMENTS FROM THE GIRLS AT A DAY RATE, AIMED TO SET A STANDARD FOR THE GIRL'S FINANCIAL AUTONOMY AND EMPOWER THEM THROUGH EMPLOYMENT AND SELF-WORTH. MOKORO SEES A COMMUNITY OF FLEDGLING, TEENAGE AND GROWN WOMEN CELEBRATING ORIGINALITY AND SELF-EMPOWERMENT. THE IMAGES PORTRAY THE GIRLS IN ALL THEIR STRENGTH. SHOWING THAT WITH THE FREEDOM TO IMAGINE, AND THE SPACE TO CREATE, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
THIS PROJECT AT ITS HEART OBSERVES FEMALE ARTISTIC SANCTUARY. JOAN OTIENO HAS MADE A SPACE WITHIN THE WALLS OF WAREMBO WASANII TO PROVIDE A CREATIVE REFUGE FOR THE WOMEN AND GIRLS OF KOROGOCHO, A SPACE WHERE INDIVIDUAL PURPOSE IS FOUND THROUGH AUDACIOUS, HANDMADE GARMENTS. MOKORO SPEAKS TO THE IMPORTANCE OF WAREMBO WASANII FOR THE OTHERWISE MARGINALIZED GIRLS AND WOMEN OF KOROGOCHO.

SUPPORTING
Warembo Wasanii, an unrecognized value and potential is nurtured both in the plentifulness of plastic waste and also the unsung artists of the slums, the women. Becoming the energetic agents of their own ideas, stories and artistic projects, these women are empowered in the studio and in their own lives.
Support the Warembo Wasanii and the girls with a donation of your choice to keep the studio running. All donations go to Warembo Wasanii non-profit organization in order to finance basic needs (electricity, water…) and buying new materials to continue to explore their art.
Also please follow the Warembo Wasanii on instagram. If you are an organization willing to help the studio on a bigger scale and collaborate, contact our team at this address.
